NFC-FRI SDK Release by NXP Semiconductors

The NFC-FRI SDK (Framework Reference Implementation) is NXP’s portable middleware and tools bundle for building, testing, and integrating Near Field Communication functionality with NXP NFC controllers. Aimed at silicon integrators, OEMs, and platform developers, it provides a proven reference stack, high-level APIs, and sample code to accelerate platform bring-up and NFC feature enablement.

Key capabilities:

  • High-level NFC APIs in C for common operations: device discovery, activation, and target management
  • Tag support for NFC Forum Tag Types 1–5, with NDEF read/write, parsing, and formatting
  • Peer-to-peer communication via LLCP and SNEP, plus handover support for Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi where applicable
  • Card emulation control and secure element access where supported by the hardware and configuration
  • Multi-protocol discovery loop and polling/listening modes
  • Robust error handling, diagnostics, and test utilities for validation and compliance work

Architecture and portability:

  • Modular layering to ease integration: OS Abstraction (OSAL), Data Abstraction (DAL), Hardware Abstraction (HAL), Core Library (phLibNfc), and Framework (phFriNfc)
  • Designed for portability across embedded RTOS environments and Linux/Android-based systems
  • Sample applications, reference configurations, headers, and build files included to reduce time-to-market

Standards alignment:

  • Implements NFC Forum specifications for NDEF, LLCP, SNEP, and Tag Types 1–5
  • Interfaces with ISO/IEC protocols commonly used in NFC (for example, ISO/IEC 14443 and 15693), with support dependent on the selected NXP controller
  • Optional support for additional technologies (such as MIFARE family) when enabled by hardware capabilities and licensing

Who it’s for:

  • Platform teams integrating NXP PN-series NFC controllers
  • OEMs and ODMs enabling NFC features at the system level
  • Developers building middleware, drivers, or services that expose NFC to applications

Benefits:

  • Reduces integration risk with a reference-quality implementation
  • Speeds bring-up and interoperability testing
  • Offers a consistent API surface across platforms and projects

Notes:

  • Actual feature set, protocol coverage, and secure element behavior depend on the target controller, board design, and chosen configuration
  • Distributed under NXP’s license terms; consult the release notes for supported versions, dependencies, and specific platform instructions
